This post has been eye opening. I had no idea how expensive the photographer would be for a cookbook photoshoot. 🤦♀️. It makes sense if you have to hire a team of people.
Such a wealth of information, as always, Sally. This will become a great resource for people, the whole topic is so mysterious. You taught me most of what I know about cookbooks!
It’s been so fun!! Also, I should have added a Not So Secret Agent side note that I love working with people who are a joy to work with. And if I work with a photographer who makes an already complex part of the process (the photo shoot) harder, well it’s a one and done. Life is too short! And there are so many talented photographers so it’s really about bringing together a fabulous team. The same goes for stylists, assistants, everyone on set needs to be working together. When a team gels, it’s truly magic! And you’re one of the great ones Kevin!
Sally, you are such a treasure trove. I can’t tell you how much my life has changed since our one-on-one conversation about this very subject because of the knowledge you imparted!
First off, thanks for sharing this insightful piece! I have to say, photography really makes a cookbook stand out and can really boost their sales. I often find myself buying cookbooks just because I love the stunning photographs inside. If you're a food blogger known for your unique photography style, it might be worth taking on the photography yourself. Just remember, it's no small task to photograph/ style / cook 100 dishes, and you'll need some extra time to get everything right. Of course, there's always the option to hire a photographer whose style aligns with yours. Be sure to run the numbers and ensure your publisher is there to support you along the way.
Yea I love buying cookbooks and find myself coming to them often first for the design and photos, especially if I’m not familiar with the author’s work yet. That said, I also love a good cookbook that doesn’t have any pictures. I think depending on the topic, that can work really well too!
Really appreciate the details Sally!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.
This is so helpful! I’ve been wondering about some of these details for a long time.

Insightful post, would love to hear your opinion on iPhone vs traditional camera quality in cookbook imagery. Thank you, Sally!
Great question! It’s totally possible to shoot your book on an iPhone. I know many authors that have!!
