Crying is such a healthy release. I’m getting better at crying 😢🤣. A sister’s bond is priceless. My sis and I are opposite, but come together to support each other, and laugh at ourselves to get us through tough times. I’m sending prayers and positive vibes for a speedy recovery.
I’m so sorry to hear Sally. Sending you lots of love and hope you heal quickly.
Thank you for sharing the congee recipe. I saved it to make. I’ve been dealing with Crohn’s for the past year, so I understand how hard it is when the food that has always been such a huge part of your life suddenly is off limits and causes pain.
Wow, Sally. So sorry to hear this, but so happy to hear that you were able to find love and comfort food in a tough time. Hope you are taking it slow and healing fast. Thanks for sharing with us <3
On a side note - we need more writing about food writers/agents/editors/industryexperts who have dietary restrictions. Every time I tell people I write about food, I feel like I have to do conversational gymnastics to NOT mention that I can't eat dairy, and don't eat meat, except seafood (especially shellfish) but not octopuses (because I find them so amazing), but really like eggs, and can have a little goat cheese . . . I feel like I'm supposed to be a food-hoover who eats and appreciates any and all food, otherwise I'm not authentic or adventurous enough to be trusted to write about food. The reality is (like all things) more complicated. Just saying . . .
Thank you for sharing Sally. I know many will relate, feel seen and a little less alone who read this. What a wonderful sister- someone who can bend when you need her to, and not break ❤️ I know in my worst moments the best of humanity rallied around. I do hope you feel that too.
The most important thing is that you're healing. This made me wish I had a sister, and now I want to figure out how to make a vegan congee. I'm with you on the crying; the tear ducts seem to have dried up years ago. Great post! I hope you feel better than ever once you're all healed up.
Sisterhood can be so special and we try to always remember how lucky we are.
In terms of making this vegan, I’d just make this with homemade veggie stock with a big emphasis on mushrooms and maybe add a bit of kelp. Omit the chicken when served and even swap for seared mushrooms on top which I’ve had and is FABULOUS.
Aw, Sally, this really brought tears to my eyes! I am so glad you're healing and that Mia is helping. Sending you so many virtual hugs and bowls of congee. <3
So happy to read this, Sally, and to know you and Amelia-Bedelia are as close as, well, sisters. I remember you both as little people from a very long ago stop at the house in Holyoke (??) where your parents lived. I won't go into details but it was dramatic with a happy ending.
This was so lovely, Sally. What an incredible sister you have! I’m so sorry you’ve been going through this, really hope you’re all better soon. How great to focus on gratitude — love truly heals!
Sending you healing thoughts.
A beautiful story about congee and sisters. Sending you the good vibes.
Thank you, healing vibes are some of the best vibes
This is beautiful💞 I dropped a tear too, while reading💧 Wishing you a smooth recovery!
Thank you!
Sending you all the good vibes for a speedy and easy recovery. I can't think of a more healing/comforting dish than congee.

I’m so sorry you’re navigating Crohn’s! The congee is easily adapted to vegan and I hope it brings you some comfort

That’s such a great way to encapsulate her. Bend for what I need without breaking
