I love this, Sally! I don't know if you remember but probably about a decade ago. I pitched an idea to you in a face-to-face meeting and it did not go well. Not well at all. Actually, after I left our meeting, I was pretty embarrassed and realized that I was all gung ho about something that I hadn't researched properly and I was incredibly ill prepared for our meeting. And embarrassed.
So now I have an entirely different idea and my heart is deeply in it. I'm taking my time and I'm not going to approach you at a time that's inconvenient to you. And ABOVE ALL before I am fully prepared. I suppose I'm even a little gun shy if truth be told!
Anyhow, I love reading all your posts and they help to keep me grounded and tuned in to exactly how I should be approaching this process before I actually reach out to you.
Thanks for commenting Wendy. To be honest, I am nervous about today's newsletter because I truly do not want to dissuade someone from taking a chance. I am not looking for perfection and I even sign people who don't have an idea but exude passion and expertise. I truly believe that access to our industry is how to help support it. It's just that there's something to be said for the research side of the pitching process. For whatever reason I noticed a trend towards the end of the year of ideas that didn't seem to be well researched. That's what stood out as an important part to remind people about the process. Unless someone is writing a trend based book, what's the rush?! If you really have a great idea, the right platform, and a well researched pitch (plus great writing of course!), it is less about IF your book will happen and more a matter of WHEN.
I’d have replied immediately to your reply, except I’ve been flat on my back sick for three days.
Anyhow, you’re right to make the comment you did, which gives a reality check to anyone wanting to publish a cookbook. Of course everyone is hopeful – as I am myself – But your proposal steps are what makes sense for any aspiring author that keeps you grounded in reality.
