Sally, I love this! Everything you write I read, read again and then read again a few more times. There’s so much insight and valuable information for aspiring cookbook authors and writers of all kinds contained in your newsletters. I use it all like a Bible! Thank you!
What an extremely delightful read! First, you know how lucky you are to have this kind of internship as an agent, but this kind of close mentorship in any field for almost all females in publishing is hard to come by. It was a joy to read about it and gave me extra love for Lisa, (who was the first agent name I ever learned when I first came into this business!). Also, it's pretty cool that you remember the days of paper proposals and cover letters in the mail and yet still have decades of agenting ahead of you. It means you get to understand the journey of so many authors from different generations, then and now, which feels like a rare secret weapon for anyone under 30. 🤍
Wow, thank you for saying this. One thing I often find myself saying when I’m on class with prospective clients is that I bring a level of historical knowledge to modern day publishing that is hard to come by. I’m beyond grateful for my training and the exposure I’ve had. And the career ahead of me!
Happy Sweet 16, Sally. How fun to learn that your first meeting in NYC was with Jennifer Williams. I wonder if that gave you rose-colored glasses, as she was (and is) so enormously fun, funny, and generous.
A former mentor of mine who was an expert in his field used to respond with "Can I pick your wallet?" when people asked him if they could pick his brain :)
There’s definitely something to be said with unexpected succession plans (i.e., taking over the family business) Here’s to daughters keeping the legacy alive!
I loved reading this post, Sally! Happy work anniversary to you! Now I'll go try to permanently forget that I said, "pick your brain," in one of my last emails to you! 😂
